Each of Swaffham's many pubs has a claim to fame.

The Red Lion has a long history as a coaching inn and dates back to 1694 but records only go back to 1781 when Susannah Rust was the licensee. Another lady innkeeper was Emma Jane Dickerson who was small of stature but a great character. On her 94th birthday she was given the title of 'First Lady of the Inns' because she was the oldest of 73,483 licensees in the country. She was involved with the trade for 83 years but had never tasted beer! It is recorded by her grandson that she sat behind the bar reading her large Bible and dressed in black.
